It was 4 in the morning, and the atmosphere was electric. The cadets of NJ-761 were only hours away from flying on a USAF C-17, and they knew it!. Soon, roll call had been completed and the bus was moving! It didn't take long to get to McGuire AFB, and the cadets couldn't wait! Soon, the cadets were already on a bus within the flight line. Before they knew it, they where strapped in and ready for takeoff! Cadets had the opportunity to look out of the windows, go into the cockpit, and even watch and participate in training exercises onboard! The cadets also had the luxury of enjoying lunch above the clouds. But unfortunately, it came time to land. The cadets had a wonderful time aboard the C-17, but it was time to head home. On their way back, the cadets ecstatic from their experience were already chatting about certain moments they cherished! They would surely remember this for a long time! After weeks of preparation, it all finally happened. On January 20th Piscataway High Schools AFJROTC In-School and After-School flights compete in the Drill off preforming all 30 steps of drill. All flights were scored on how pristine they performed each step, test scores were also considered during scoring, concluding a winner of the competition. After completing all scoring, a winner was finally announced. Cadet Allyssa Ruiz, a flight commander of an after-school class was awarded, along with her flight; the winner of the competition. After asking her about her experience of preparing for the Drill off she stated, “it was stressful to remember all the steps and make sure everyone was doing them right, but everyone worked together to improve so it was quite fun.” When asked how she and her flight overcame difficulties when preparing she noted, “I got through it by going through each routine repeatedly and trying to get it as good as possible.” Overall, Cadet Ruiz felt that “winning the comp was really exciting […] seeing all of the cadets within [her] flight seeing having their hard work pay off.” Overall, all cadets worked hard to prepare for the competition learning various skills such as teamwork, and self-discipline.
Are you guys ready to battle it out for this years HONOR FLIGHT? Who are the best of the best cadets? I mean, we are all great but, who can top our greatness? Coming soon, all cadets will battle it out and see who really knows their 30 steps of drill! However, along with know these steps there are many more steps that go in to determining who deserves the prize to be awarded honor flight... Are your grades up? How well are you at participating in class? Are you an honorable cadet?
Lets get down to business! Practice makes perfect Cadets! To start the New Year off right, the cadets of Piscataway high school's AFJROTC program are bringing the year in with another cadet assembly! For the first cadet assembly of 2017, Lieutenant Brittany Herits has come to visit us to tell us all about her life and the transition from civilian life to military life. Lieutenant Brittany Herits is a military lover from Metuchan, NJ who aspired to be a pediatrician but soon learned to love being a family medical physician. She now serves in the marine corps and loves it. Even though that's no surprise because she probably was going to love it anyways since, from the age of a little girl, she knew what she wanted to do already. No back up plan was going to stop her, Lieutenant Herits knew where she wanted to be.
From January 13th's cadet assembly many of the cadets learned that with the right amount of determination and grit we can get to where we want to be in life no matter what. Persistence is key. So lets pursue our goals like Lieutenant Brittany Herits! It was 5 o-clock in the evening when cadets donned their unit shirts and arrived at Knollwood Elementary for one purpose: Knolwood's Family Fun Night! Shortly after arriving, the cadets immediately got busy, moving tables, preparing snacks and drinks, and ripping dozens of tickets for the upcoming movie night.
Then, around 6:10, the frenzy began! Parents with eager children flooded the hallways in anticipaiton for the movie night. With welcoming smiles, the cadets did not miss a beat, as they swiftly but efficiently distributed tickets and snacks to parents and children of all ages. When the dust settled and all of the parents and children were situated watching Disney's, "Zootopia", the cadets were awarded with a break from their hard work, but not for long! Mrs. Morrow, a teacher at Knolwood and the host of the Knollwood Mentoring Program requested some assistance to prepare for the upcoming week's Knollwood Mentoring Program preparation, and the cadets politely agreed without hesitation. Working efficiently and cooperatively, the cadets were able to finish all their preparatory work, awarding themselves another short break until their final task was at hand. The cadets generously assisted the janitors and staff cleaning up after the remains of popcorn and such, as well as, moving the tables and chairs back into place thus ending their night feeling accomplished and proud! On November 19, the Piscataway High School Drill Team competed at their first Drill Competition of 2016-2017 school year, hosted at Jackson Memorial High School. After several weeks of practicing for the many different events, the team came together and competed. Upon arrival at the Jackson Memorial High School, the team met to review the event schedule for the day. After completion of all the events, all the teams who competed at the event met in the gym for a game of knockout, and the award ceremony. Here is what Piscataway won at the Jackson Drill Competition:
___________________________________________ 1st Place Academic Team 1st Place Unarmed Dual Exhibition 2nd Place Knockout - C/Amn Alex Ojeda 2nd Place Armed Dual Exhibition 3rd Place New Cadet Regulation ___________________________________________ After the day was done, the cadets went to Fountainbleu restaurant to celebrate their achievements. After the day was done, cadets went home with a valuable lesson learned - the Drill Team must work as single unified team in order to succeed, and succeed they did on that day. At around 4-5 in the morning cadets arrived at the high school to prepare for the competition. When you walked into the building you could already feel the anxiousness in the air. Our cadets practiced long and hard and today was the day to show the judges what they were really made of.
Soon after entering the school, the other schools began to arrive and the events began to take place. Who was going to win? Was there going to be a game of knockout? Where did our superior cadets stand? The Piscataway AFJROTC cadets stood long and strong. They gave their best of their in every competitive round. Then around 11 the cadets ate lunch to replenish those hungry bellies. Lunch was delicious! But, of course, they deserved it for how hard they were working, right? Then, after lunch was over the last events finished up and the award ceremony was held. This year our cadets brought home a ton of trophies making us extremely proud. The trophies recieved consist of the following: - 1st place Academic - 1st place Unarmed Dual Exhibiton - 2nd place Armed Dual Exhibition - 2nd place individual knockout (C/ Ojeda) - 3rd place New Cadet Unarmed Regulation What a mighty drill competition at Jackson this was! We should be very proud of our cadets this year. Don't forget to congratulate them and all of the cadets who volunteered for this event! It was nine in the morning, and the cadets of the NJ-761 Choir and Color guard made their way towards PHS. Their objective was to present the colors and sing the national anthem at a football game between Piscataway and Manalapan.
After school ended, various clubs as well as NJ-761 started to prepare for the scariest event of the year, Haunted High. Haunted High is an event the school hosts in order to raise money for a charity, which consists of different clubs erecting mazes in which they attempt to scare the visitors into voting for them.
It was two o'clock, and each club was in a frenzy to finish their room first. For the past couple of years though, the high school's AFJROTC has set the example by winning first place. This year would be no exception. The cadets quickly erected theirs and had plenty of time to focus on costumes, and place mouth watering treats at the end of the spooky maze. Once it was time for the event to start, the cadets had already finished their maze and costumes. Then it was just a matter of scaring the visitors. After the event ended, the cadets proceeded to commence their cleanup, turning their spooky maze back into a normal science classroom in under ten minutes. One final meeting was held where cadets discussed how the event went, and then proceeded to go home after an incredibly fun experience. |
