Today we had the annual JROTC Drill Off to assess the performance of every flight, and to help determine which one will win the title of Honor Flight. Seven NJ-761 alumni came back to grade the flights in their abilities to perform the 30 steps of drill. Each flight, commanded by both the Flight Commanders and another cadet of that flight, went through the movements and were evaluated on their precision, unity, and the overall performance of the routine. The grades from the Drill Off will be combined with each flights' inspection grades and semester grades to determine who will take the title of Honor Flight. This competition, fostering camaraderie and increasing the esprit de corps, has been a tradition in this unit for years, and will show which flight can be considered the "best."
Today was the January Assembly. Seven alumni from the unit came back to talk to us about their college experiences, and what the cadets could expect after graduating high school. Afterwards, the floor was open to questions from the cadets. Based on the questions from the cadets, it seemed that many of them had some concerns about college life. One cadet asked "Compared to the essays in high school, how much harder are the essays in college?" Fortunately, the alumni were able to put to rest any of their misguided fears. The cadets had a good time talking to these alumni, who in turn enjoyed meeting these new cadets. Overall the assembly was a learning experience for our cadets and they have greatly benefited from it.
The 8th Grade Experience was a successful event. Many students from the middle schools signed up to possibly join next year! Even though many of them were scared to join, the cadets talked them and their parents through exactly what our JROTC program is about. They watched as C/MSgt Ankush De and C/A1C Tanya Chahal spin rifles and were amazed. Some of them even said that they wish to be able to do the same as them. We all love being a part of the program and each other and we can't wait to share this experience with the incoming 8th graders!
