After weeks of preparation, it all finally happened. On January 20th Piscataway High Schools AFJROTC In-School and After-School flights compete in the Drill off preforming all 30 steps of drill. All flights were scored on how pristine they performed each step, test scores were also considered during scoring, concluding a winner of the competition. After completing all scoring, a winner was finally announced. Cadet Allyssa Ruiz, a flight commander of an after-school class was awarded, along with her flight; the winner of the competition. After asking her about her experience of preparing for the Drill off she stated, “it was stressful to remember all the steps and make sure everyone was doing them right, but everyone worked together to improve so it was quite fun.” When asked how she and her flight overcame difficulties when preparing she noted, “I got through it by going through each routine repeatedly and trying to get it as good as possible.” Overall, Cadet Ruiz felt that “winning the comp was really exciting […] seeing all of the cadets within [her] flight seeing having their hard work pay off.” Overall, all cadets worked hard to prepare for the competition learning various skills such as teamwork, and self-discipline.
